Lévy is a pre-eminent journalist, having started his career as a war reporter for Combat, the famous underground newspaper founded by Camus during the Nazi occupation of France.

BHL est présenté par certains journalistes comme un imposteur intellectuel. Ses détracteurs estiment que sa réussite ne serait due qu'à un réseau de connaissances bien organisé.

Le 1er décembre 2009, la revue américaine Foreign Policy (!) lui attribue la 31e place des personnages les plus influents  au monde, notamment devant Dominique Strauss-Kahn (33e), Esther Duflo (41e) et Jacques Attali (86e)
